The Sun is the central star of our Solar System and the most important source of energy for life on Earth. Clocking in at a whopping 1,392,784 km in diameter and almost 2 nonillion kg, it is by far the largest and most massive object in the Solar System, but these proportions pale in comparison to the largest supergiants and hypergiants, which can have radii over 1 000 times the Sun's. In spite of the misconception, the Sun is not an average star. The most common type of star is actually the red dwarf, which make up 76% of the Milky Way's population, and are on average, about a fifth of the mass of the Sun.
