A quantum is a discrete unit of energy proportional in magnitude to the frequency of the radiation it represents. Quantum units of energy prevent the electron in an atom from spiraling towards the center, as in order to fall the electron must lose a fractional amount of energy, and quantum are whole numbers, therefore the electron cannot collapse to the atom's center.
