This article is about class of minor planet. Not to be confused with Astroid.

An asteroid is a minor planet generally not in hydrostatic equilibrium orbiting some type of stellar mass and has not cleared its neighboring region. Typically, they orbit a star in a Solar System within large belt that consists of other minor planets, as their gravity is not strong enough to clear its neighbourhood. The belt consisting of asteroids in our solar system is the Main Belt, generally known as the asteroid belt.

Larger asteroids are called planetoids and smaller ones are called meteoroids. Asteroids can also be classed by what their main composition is. Carbonaceous asteroids are C-type asteroids, metallic asteroids are M-type asteroids, and silicaceous asteroids are S-type asteroids.
